Code of Conduct
Please use the following guidelines as you participate in
the display of love and support of Lubbock which is to be staged during the
visit of Rev. Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church. THIS IS TO BE A SILENT
PROTEST conducted in love and peace. They want a reaction - do not be the
person that makes their day.
To protect all concerned citizens who wish to participate
in this demonstration, we provide the following suggestions for conduct in
response to the methods of protest used by the WBC.
 | WBC has a history of litigation against
counter-protestors. They sometimes use small children in their protests.
This can be alarming and heart-wrenching to those watching. This is often the
most difficult thing to maintain your composer in the face of small children
using offensive ‘adult’ language. |
 | For your own safety please do NOT bring any items with
you which could be used or construed as a weapon – such as bottles, cans,
containers, signs on sticks, or ‘props.’ This is for your safety – remember
you may not intend it as a weapon, but someone might take it from you. |
 | You will be attending this event as an individual. None
of the organizations present at the events are responsible for your safety.
You attend at your own risk. |
 | DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES engage any member
of WBC, verbally, non-verbally (gestures, etc), or physically. This includes
‘gestures of kindness’ to defuse their behavior. (such as offering coffee or
food or offering to ‘debate’ them.) THIS DOES NOT WORK, AND PUTS YOU AT RISK
OF LITIGATION. |
 | Cooperate with all law enforcement and civil servants
present. They are here for your safety as well as WBC. |
 | Help protect the members of our community as well as WBC
members by seeking law enforcement help at the onset of any potentially
volatile situation you witness. |
 | Use your head! Be careful, and do not risk your
safety. Do not go to jail for these people. Above all, remember that this is
a demonstration of love which is to be conducted in a peaceful manner. |
